This unit is responsible for risk assessment of sex offenders and those offenders known as predatory offenders under the Community Notification Act (M.S. 244.052). Risk assessments are done for several purposes, including assessments to recommend risk level assignment for community notification, treatment referrals, and referrals for civil commitment as a person with a sexual psychopathic personality or a sexually dangerous person.(Community Notification Act Backgrounder)

The unit is also responsible for providing community notification information to law enforcement agencies for each predatory offender released from prison and subsequent address changes of each offender. In conjunction with this responsibility, this unit also maintains a website with information provided by local law enforcement agencies on level 3 predatory offenders in the community (Level 3 Offender Search).

In support of the risk assessment process, research has been done to develop and maintain an actuarial risk assessment instrument called the Minnesota Sex Offender Screening Tool-Revised (MnSOST-R) as well as sex offender recidivism and program effectiveness.
